The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Dr. Afrah Al-Zuba, discussed today, via video conference, with the head of the International Monetary Fund mission to Yemen, Esther Perez Ruiz, the latest economic developments in Yemen and arrangements for resuming Article IV consultations with the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Yemen.
The meeting, which included the IMF Resident Representative in Yemen, Mohamed Jaber, IMF Executive Director Dr. Mohamed Maati, and a number of economic experts and stakeholders from both sides, noted that the Yemeni economy has shown resilience and strength in the face of recent challenges.
Al-Zuba explained that the Central Bank has managed the crisis efficiently and professionally, without any significant decline in the exchange rate, and that the payment of civil service salaries has contributed to restoring purchasing power and stimulating economic activity. She expressed her appreciation for the pivotal role played by the International Monetary Fund in supporting Yemeni institutions, noting that the Fund's contributions in the areas of capacity building and technical support have greatly contributed to improving the performance of key government institutions, including the Central Bank and the Ministry of Finance.
She reviewed the political and security situation, confirming the tangible improvement in basic services in liberated cities. She affirmed the government's commitment to building on previous plans and reforms, with a focus on economic recovery and stability, strengthening basic services, achieving social cohesion, and enhancing governance, transparency and accountability.
For her part, the head of the IMF mission expressed her satisfaction with the growing political and security stability and the strategic continuity of government policies, affirming the Fund's commitment to moving forward with Article IV consultations, which represent a pivotal step in strengthening international confidence in the Yemeni economy. She announced plans to hold a series of technical meetings in the coming days with the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank, with the aim of accelerating the completion of the consultations.
The IMF Managing Director congratulated the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation on her appointment, affirming the Fund's full readiness to support Yemen in facing the current challenges and expressing his confidence in the team working on the Yemen file and in the success of the upcoming consultations.
