The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Dr Afrah Al-Zuba, today discussed with the South Korean Ambassador to Yemen, Do Bong-kai, aspects of joint cooperation between the two countries and ways to strengthen South Korean support for Yemen in the fields of development and humanitarian aid.

During the meeting, Minister Al-Zuba touched upon the situation in the liberated areas and the government’s efforts to improve services and advance economic and administrative reform. She also highlighted the worsening humanitarian suffering in areas under the control of the Houthi terrorist militias, resulting from practices and measures targeting humanitarian organisations and relief work.

The Minister of Planning reviewed the areas of Korean support provided to Yemen in the sectors of water, food security, technical education, vocational training and capacity building, expressing the Yemeni government’s appreciation for the support provided by the Republic of Korea to Yemen in a number of vital sectors.

Minister Al-Zuba emphasised the importance of expanding training and rehabilitation programmes through the implementation of training packages targeting technical institutes, students and trainers, thereby contributing to raising the efficiency of institutions and enhancing their social impact. She noted the importance of increasing the level of support directed towards government institutions and international organisations operating in Yemen, emphasising the need to strengthen integration and coordination with international donors.

Dr Al-Zuba highlighted the challenges facing Yemen as a result of regional developments and their repercussions on humanitarian and development conditions, affirming the Yemeni government’s aspiration for further cooperation and partnership with the Republic of Korea, particularly in the areas of technical and professional support for ministries and government institutions, and support for the fisheries, transport, and education sectors.

For his part, the South Korean Ambassador affirmed his country’s commitment to continuing its support for Yemen and strengthening efforts to achieve security and stability, as well as supporting the path to economic recovery. He noted that the Republic of Korea provides annual support to Yemen estimated at around $20 million, delivered through a number of international organisations, in addition to direct support provided to the technical education sector in Aden and Mukalla.
