The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Dr Afrah Al-Zuba, met today in the temporary capital, Aden, with the Country Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services in the Middle East (UNOPS), Mohammed Othman, to discuss strengthening joint cooperation in implementing development and service projects that meet urgent humanitarian and development needs, particularly in vital sectors.

Minister Al-Zuba emphasised the importance of supporting recovery and development efforts in Yemen, with a focus on the health and water sectors, noting the challenges associated with funding shortages and the need to seek additional support to ensure the continuity of humanitarian and development interventions.

The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation commended the existing partnership between the government and UNIPS in implementing development projects and interventions and aligning them with the national plans submitted by the government, thereby achieving a tangible impact on improving basic services. She emphasised the importance of continuing joint cooperation to implement further service and development projects.

For his part, the UNIPS Country Director reviewed the Office’s interventions in Yemen since the start of its operations, which have covered a number of vital sectors including education, water, and electricity, with a focus on improving basic services, as well as its interventions under the ‘Supporting Lifelines’ approach, which included support for food security, health facilities, the rehabilitation of basic infrastructure and road repairs.

The UN official expressed the Office’s readiness to provide technical support, strengthen the role of local institutions, and support various priority areas, particularly the water and health sectors, as these are among the most vital sectors in Yemen.
