The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Dr Afrah Al-Zuba, met today in the temporary capital with the Japanese Ambassador to Yemen, Yuichi Nakashima, to discuss ways of strengthening cooperation and coordination between the two sides and continuing to provide technical and economic support.
The meeting addressed opportunities for developing and implementing future projects, as well as support in humanitarian and development sectors in line with the government’s priorities and plans. It also covered the current economic, humanitarian and development situation in Yemen, and the government’s development plan.
Minister Al-Zuba outlined the priorities and objectives of the Economic, Social and Reconstruction Plan for 2027–2029, which the government is preparing as a national framework for development and investment projects. She expressed the government’s aspiration to benefit from Japanese expertise in the fields of planning, reconstruction and post-crisis recovery.
She commended Japan’s continued support over recent years, particularly in the areas of food security, education, health and capacity-building. She called for consideration of a gradual return to direct Japanese interventions and the establishment of a joint working mechanism to enable the implementation of development projects through national institutions such as the Social Fund for Development and the Public Works Fund.
The Minister of Planning emphasised the importance of utilising Japanese interventions in projects with a developmental impact, such as the infrastructure, energy, transport and reconstruction sectors, alongside building national institutions and strengthening economic resilience. She noted the country’s need for sustainable development investments. She reiterated the government’s aspiration to strengthen its strategic partnership with Japan and expand areas of cooperation in a way that contributes to supporting economic recovery efforts and achieving sustainable development.
For his part, the Japanese Ambassador affirmed his country’s continued support for Yemen and for the government’s efforts in the developmental and humanitarian fields, as well as its commitment to continuing coordination with development partners to support national priorities and enhance opportunities for recovery and stability. He commended the existing cooperation with the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation.
